Resentment #196

Shortlisted for Neon Books flash fiction anthology, October 2020.

I studied the supermarket shelf, bottled tonics and toiletries colour-coded in a sickly rainbow. Pink stood for digestive pain and nail polish removal.

“Can we get Potato Smiles please?”

Blue, for the twin worlds of mouthwash and Paracetamol.

“Please!”

Orange, for foot-files and backache.

“POTATO SMILES!”

I placed one arm over my stomach, hoping to somehow muffle the vinegary little voice. £8 for a pale lavender pregnancy test to tell me what I already knew.
